Colliflower ear. Too much punching to the ear can cause blood clots that swell up when aggravated. That's what happend to James Thompson.

They call it cauliflower ear.

It is caused by continual hitting & rubbing, the ear swells up & pulpy over the years, thus calling it caulifower ears as it resembled a head of cauliflower, the vegetable. Rugby forwards in particular are prone to this happening, unless they take precautions like headgear & taping the ears.
