Ear plugs on airplanes?

I was wondering that if you put ear plugs right before you land to you feel pain? Also do you have to pop your ear when using earplugs?

  1. Ear plugs most likely will not give you any benefit. In fact, they may even make your ears hurt more. The pressure inside your head needs to equalize with the pressure of any aircraft's cabin. Your ears do that by means of expelling air out of your nasal passages. If you plug your ears, air cannot escape and pressure will continue to build. The best way to prevent your ear from "plugging up" is to pop them every few minutes in the climb and descent stages of your flight. Lower your jaw in a yawn-like motion or chew gum. There are a few other remedies out there as well.
