I have had ear problems my whole life. I have had tubes put in my ears 3 times. Anytime I get water in my ears it is painful and won't come out. I can't go on air planes because the pain is so significant and even driving through the mountains hurts a lot. Two weeks ago I went for a drive through the mountains and experienced the usual discomfort but it never went away in my right ear. I went to the doctor 4 days ago and he insisted that that he syringe my right ear. This is a simple and common practice to remove excess wax however the procedure did not work on me and was excruciatingly painful. The doctor was forced to stop and since then I have had no hearing in my right ear and a lot of discomfort. I woke up in the middle of the night last night with discharge and even still the worst pain I have ever felt. I went to emergency and they prescribed to me: Cerumol drops to loosen the wax and Tylenol 3 for the pain. The drops don't seem to be working and the pain is still unbearable. No doctors seem to be able to help and the problem keeps getting worse. I am out of options and I can't ignore the deafness or the pain. Please please help me.

  1. Your not going to like to hear this, but compacted wax is causing the deafness.  I compacted mine once with one of those ear-thingies, trying to clean the wax out.  It took a week to get hearing back.

Problem is, I finally got it back by spending an afternoon squirting warm water deep in the ear, and that sounds like it won't work for you.

You would think that some kind of high frequency sonic vibrator could be used to loosen the wax up, without increasing your pain.
