Question:

Ear wax hearing problem?

I have been to the doctor gp and he prescribed some sodium hydrogen carbonate ear drops for my ear wax problem. After I used them for the first time I found that the hearing in one of my ears was slightly worst than before I used the drops (which was already quite bad).

Also some of the ear drops came out and I experienced a hot sensation as it did so.

Do you think what I have said is normal ??

  1. I found that the hearing in one of my ears was slightly worst than before whilst commencing treatment but has been said, things do improve. You may prefer to try something more gentle initially than what you have been prescribed and is readily available over the counter at your local pharmacy such as Olive Oil. It worked for me. It can be bought in a small bottle but also in little capsules.

Keeping the liquid in can be a nuisance and no matter what happens unless someone helps apply them, doing it yourself, some will always be lost.

    Good luck

  2. Has the doctor taken a close examination of your ears first to make sure the ear wax balls are small enough to go out that way?

I had a wax ball in one of my ears last year that was giving me some annoying problems. The doctor tried to remove it in the office with warm water shooting out from a jet, but it didn't budge. He ended up removing it with a hook viewing my ear by close with a microscope. The ball was rather huge and d**n ugly looking.

Keep up with your current treatment to see if it works. The hot sensation is normal. If not, you might have to go with an Ear, Nose & Throat doctor that has access to one of these microcopes to have the ball removed. Removing mine didn't improve my hearing, but I still felt more comfortable without it.

  3. yes, it sounds normal.  It's probably the ear wax softening and dislodging.  I have had impacted ear wax that had to be removed with a surgical hook - that was weird!  However, it was great to be able to hear again!  Give it a couple of days for your ears to heal.

  4. No, not normal. I am sure it will say on the instructions that should you experience any of the side affects which you have mentioned you must stop using the drops and contact your doctor. Do so.

  5. My doctor suggested I use peroxide, try that

  6. The drops, which are somewhat oily so that they can work longer before evaporating, will cause your hearing to decrease temporarily (like when you get water in your ear when you are swimming). If some one else is instilling the drops, have them GENTLY pully the ear lobe out down and out which will straighten out the ear canal and allow the drops to get to the ear drum more easily and quickly. The sensation of warmth when the extra amount of drops comes out is because the ear canal is slightly warmer than the skin on your face/neck. It is normal.
