Hello I am 22 years old with a degree in Public Relations and my boyfriend is 21 with a degree in Tv/Video Production. We are planning on moving to Houston Texas next summer. But we are unfamiliar with the State in general. We are from Chicago, Il. We want to know whats the best(yet affordable)area to live in. We will be looking for apartments next January there. We want to be able to walk around at night and still feel safe. We are young so we do like to have fun also..Any suggestions and good apartment suggestion.? thank you so much!! muah

  1. Like some of the other posters said Houston doesn't really lend itself to walking around.  Things are spread out and there is a lot of traffic so you'll probably want to live close to work.

I recommend signing a 6 month lease at an apt close to your work and that will give you some time to learn about the city and move to another neighborhood if you would like at the end of your lease.

The neighborhoods with the most young people/walkable areas/fund stuff are Midtown and the Rice village area.  Those places will be the best fit.

  2. idk but live in like the good part. lol!

If you are a rich person, Texas is a great state to live in, because they don't have a state income tax, and their tax rate is amongst the lowest in the nation. But if you're poor, it is a lot harder to get any assistance there, because there is virtually very little that is allotted for social programs.

As far as crime is concerned, as long as you stay away from major cities (such as Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin) you should be able to live in communities where there is little or no crime rate. In some of the cities mentioned, the crime rate is amongst the highest in the nation.

    austin seems nice..

  3. Piney Point Village or the Montrose area would both be nice areas for what you are seeking. They are small and walkable, near many good restaurants and shopping areas.

  4. Houston is HUGE!  First, you will have to decide what area of Houston you want to live in.   Of course, this will be dependant on where your jobs are located.     I live on the Northside of Houston.  There are a couple of areas that are nice on this side.  You may try The Woodlands or Kingwood.    Second, what is affordable to you?   Your looking @ about 750-900 for a 1 bedroom and 900-1300 for a 2 bedroom.

  5. well the best in houston area would be sugar land

    ranked top 10

nice quiet plenty of things to do

    safe

the cheapest appartments i can think of

run about a grand but its def. worth it

also try brazos town center in richmond

    great development there

  6. I agree with most of the others that it will really depend on what part of the city you work in.  Houston is the 4th largest city in the nation and depending on where you work, the commute to work daily can drive you crazy.  Having said that, if you end up in West Houston, Katy is a nice area.  It has grown alot and has everything you need without having to drive all the way into the city.  Most of the time, it is only a 30 - 40 minute commute to downtown.   Good luck to you.

  7. for your degrees, i would look in pearland, easy hop to anywhere downtown, or galleria area where all the PR,TV jobs are.  west university place and bellaire would also be good choices.

i would avoid katy, memorial,  or sugarland, that's all oil "bidness"

  8. For fun I would say mid town, if you plan on a family outside the HISD area.  Katy Kingwood CY Fair are all very good ISD's

  9. The Mid Town area is in your price range and has lots of apartments with couples/singles your age. Nice shops & restaurants with patio dining make those few blocks a nice area to walk around.

I'll warn you that Houston is not the kind of city where people walk around alot. When I moved here from NYC I asked where people walked here and was sent to The Galleria (an indoor mall)! It's more like LA where everyone drives, even a few blocks.

Here is a link for the Houston Area Realtors if you want a head start on apartment hunting...
