Early Champions races at Romford Recap
Champions Night is always a big night for punters, owners, and trainers alike, and last night at Romford was no exception as six Champions races were run. The first three races included the Puppy Final, the Maiden Stayers Final, and the Hurdle Final.
Coral Champions Night Puppy Final
Trainer, Seamus Cahill, looked on as 2-5 race favourite, Rayvin Giovanni, claimed first place in the Puppy Final over Little Urge. It was one four wins for Cahill on the day.  Urge led the race early, but Giovanni took it from him on the third bend with an impressive burst that saw him ultimately win by a huge 5½ lengths.
Devastator was expected to finish in the top three, but instead it was a surprising 25-1 longshot, Cotswold Hegarty, taking third place by a shoulder over Devastator. Finishing in fifth was Hidden Universe and in sixth was Killishin Sport.
Coral Champions Night Maiden Stayers Final
After baulking on the first bend of the Maiden Stayers, the 6-4 race favourite, third place finisher Razldazl Zamba, could do little but watch Odell Knight win the race with Elusive Sam finishing close behind in second.
Both Knight and Sam were trained by Lorraine Sams, and while she may have expected Knight at 3-1 to compete for first, surely it was a shock to see 12-1 long shot, Sam, finish in second spot behind Knight. Beating the seemingly unbeatable Cahill in the race was icing on the cake for Sams as Cahill’s hound, Droopys Master, finished well back in fourth.
Taking fifth in the Stayers Final was Droopys Elbow, and in sixth was Lasse Viren.
Coral Champions Night Hurdle Final
The Hurdle Final had 9-4 joint favourites, Lenson Flash and Little Spark finish in second and fifth respectively. Spark lost ground on the leaders early, and then hit the fourth hurdle to take him out of contention. The only hound Spark was able to beat was Freedom Man, who stumbled out of the traps.
Flash looked good from the traps, and led the race until the fourth hurdle when Romeo In Miami, the biggest longshot of the race at 8-1, took the lead winning the race by a ½ length. Third place went to Platinum Formaly, and behind him in fourth was Bigstrongpup.
Considering Cahill already had a significant lead in the Trainers Championship standings yesterday’s wins will all but clinch the Trainers Championship for him.
