Ok so I had a positive pregnancy test on 08/27, on 08/30 i started bleeding pretty heavy and was shocked because I never had bleeding with any pregnancy ( i have 3 children) Well I went to hosp, and they said it was a "threatened m/c" I had a hcg level of just 23, Had blood work repeated yesterday, I am confused though cause the dr I sawa yesterday did another pregnancy test in office and said that the level would have to be at least 25 for it to be detected in my urine, and the test was POSITIVE...I am like what the heck? Am I pregnant or not? I feel so emotionally confused and like a rollercoaster. I have been bloated and feeling icky the last few days and REALLY tired. So basically I would assume a hcg level should drop, not increase if I am m/c'ing right? If I was only 23 at hosp on sunday why would it go up enough to be detectable on a urine test? Dunno...just confused, has anyone been through anything like this??? Thanks so much for the time to read this!

  1. Sometimes it takes a while for the products of conception to be completely sloughed off.  However, you may have had a molar pregnancy - and your doctor should monitor your hCG levels to make sure they go to zero within a few weeks, or you should have a D&C to scrape anything that remains as that can cause not only infertility but cancer if left untreated.

Oh yeah, hCG can be concentrated in urine, so a positive doesn't mean a whole lot.  You're tired and icky because you miscarried, you lost a lot of blood, and you still have some of the hormones of pregnancy in your body.  And I bet you're feeling pretty miserable anyway since what was a pregnancy and a baby to look forward to has been abruptly ended.  Get a lot of rest and take care of yourself, even an early miscarriage is sometimes a hard thing to deal with.

  2. I HAD THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPEN!

I had a pregnancy with twins, and then miscarried.  My husband and I got pregnant 3 months later with a singleton.  I had bleeding and then the hCg levels dropped.  I miscarried at 9 1/2 weeks.  hCg levels should increase by the thousands, according to my lab results.

But-- on the positive side... I have 3 kids out of 5 pregnancies.  So-- there's hope!

  3. I would ask to see your doctor. Get another blood test right away it will give you peace of mind if you know your hcg level.

  4. To be honest, I would be going crazy in that position. I would return to the hospital and say I am cramping and pregnant or something to get someone to seriously look into it.

  5. Well first of all a "threatened miscarriage" does not mean you are actually miscarrying yet. It means just what it says - that there is a potential threat of a miscarriage happening. So you aren't miscarrying. If you were, you would know because they would go through your options with you (miscarry naturally at home, have D & C, take drugs to induce the miscarriage, etc.) So again - you are NOT miscarrying at this point. If your levels are rising that is a good thing. Your levels will not rise if you are having a miscarriage - that is correct. It seems like you are just fine although that does not mean that you wont eventually miscarry as well. You will probably be monitored closely since you have been bleeding in the past. Good luck
