Question:

Early childhood special education/resource teachers? What exactly is this?

I am interesting in becoming an Early Childhood Educator. At my local college they have a 2 year ECE diploma, and then a 1 year optional 'Resource Teacher' certificate program. The program description - (http://www.niagaracollege.ca/programs/ecert_0220/). Anyway, would this mean I would work specifically and only with special needs children (I'd love that!), and would I make more money doing that than just basic ECE? Thank you!

  1. Yes, but...In most situations you need a four year degree to be a Special Ed teacher so my guess is that while the 2 year degree would qualify you to be lead teacher in a day care center in NY (I assume that's where Niagara is) I.m not sure just what the extra training would get you. I'd contact the college and ask very specific questions. It may be that you could be an Assistant to a Special Ed teacher.

  2. Typically, yes, you could make more money than a regular "preschool teacher" would- but it is a specialty that you really have to love.  Working with children with disabilities is difficult and emotionally draining, but has the biggest intrinsic rewards.  I have worked in a preschool for children with developmental delays for over 7 years, and I can't imagine doing anything else.  I love the kids and the staff.  We have the highest paid staff in the area around us, and the most educated.  Staff averages 15 years in service (that's with a staff of over 65 people!)- they are very dedicated to the work they do.  I would suggest taking enough classes to get yourself working in a center, then taking the time to work with children with disabilities before you go further in your schooling.  That way, you can see if it really is something you are passionate about.  Good luck!  We need more people in this field that love kids with disabilities!

  3. you could do that and get an another diploma so you could teach special kids or normal kids.

  4. ECE is a step up program to get into the Elementary Ed 4 year program, OR is good for teaching preschool....

it won't let you teach K-5

Resource room is teaching handicapped/special needs children, they are desparate for these because it's incredibly hard and heartbreaking work and nobody will stay in it for long...
