Any idea what to do in early morning? I arrive at 04.55 am at Melbourne airport - too late to check in with hotel to go to bed, and too early for normal business activities. I plan a first day of my holiday with gentle sightseeing. Any ideas, anyone?

  1. Keep in mind that at this time of year it is dark in Melbourne until around 7am. This is probably about the time that Cafe's start opening too, so you might be a bit early for a coffee and some breakfast.

It will only take about half an hour to get to the city from the airport.

My only suggestion is to perhaps just walk around the city, head down to southbank and walk along the river until the cafe's open.

If all else fails, I think the Crown Casino is open at that hour?

  2. We arrived in Melbourne an hour later than your going to, my cousins picked us up at the airport and drove us to St Kilda to a lovely little restaurant called Kat Bahloo were we had breakfast then a nice stroll on the beach, I don't think anything was over $15 and it was lovely, relaxing and worth going to, have a great time in Australia, it really is an amazing place.

  3. It will take around an hour to get to the city. The best thing to do is probably go to the hilton which is just across from the airport. Yes it may cost a bit but it is easier than walking around the city worrying about your luggage. When it is close to check in time at your hotel grab a taxi and go. That way you can rest a bit before spending your day with your activities

  4. By the time u check out and get to the CBD it will be like 6:30am. I would reccommend checking out all the little laneways in the CBD, grab breaky and a coffee (we have fabulous coffee in melb!)

Then just wonder around, fed square, bourke st. etc. Just make sure u dress warmly this time of year!

  5. It will take you over an hour to get to the city. If you feel like breakfast, have it in Degraves Street which is a tiny lane off Flinders Street directly opposite Flinders Street train station. Great food and lots of atmosphere. Then, cross Flinders Street and then Princes Bridge which runs between the back of Federation Square and the station (you can't miss either one). Once across the bridge, turn left and amble down into the magnificent gardens beside the Yarra River. The Yarra isn't much of a river for size, but it's very pretty there, particularly in the morning if the weather is fine. The gardens are huge and adjoin Melbourne's old and beautiful Botanical Gardens. The Shrine of Remembrance is also in the gardens a bit further along St Kilda Road (Princes Bridge is at the very end of St Kilda Road). If you don't want to walk that far, hop on a tram.

  6. Get a taxi to your hotel- there should be a night porter on duty so that you can leave your luggage. Give them a ring to check if it is ok.

If not then get the taxi to Southern Cross Station and they have luggage lockers there.

From wherever you are in the city  walk  across the river to the Crown casino. You should be able to get something to eat and drink there. They are open 24/7

Southgate Food Hall further down  Southbank from the casino opens at 7am

Walk along southbank promenade and go to the Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square - they open at 9am.

You can pick up maps, leaflets, book tours, etc.

At 9.30 be outside the Cathedral Door opposite the visitors centre on Flinders Street. You can take the free shuttle bus,(runs every 20mins) which you can use every day and jump on and off at different places. However, on your first day, stay on and do the whole ciruit, just over an hour - it will give you a great orientation of Melbourne. After that take  the free City Circle tram 10-6, 10-9 Th.Fr.Sat. Will take an hour for the whole journey. By doing both will give you an insight into what the city has to offer. It has running commentary and tells you a little about the history.

By then hopefully you will be able to get into your hotel.

    Enjoy Melbourne - its Marvellous
