  1. Of course they serve a purpose...the fleshy part (pinnae or auricle) of your ear helps you to hear..it catches sound waves and directs them to your ear...it localizes sound sources as well.

  2. To answer the question, you first need to know about how sound travels. Sound travels in a form of waves. Therefore, the flaps and curly bits are actually to capture the sound waves and direct the waves into the ear hole. If there are no flaps and curly bits, it is harder for the sound waves to enter our ear canals.

As for eyebrows, the purpose it to capture moisture, such as sweat and water. The eyebrows trap these moisture so that it does not enter the eyes. That is why when you wash your face, the eyebrows are the wettest part of your face.

  3. Ears gather sound to bring it into the hole in your head.  Some animals do have just holes (like turtles) and they don't hear as well.  People who lose their outer ears in accidents have trouble hearing.

As far as the shape of the ear, your guess is as good as mine.

(If I had no ears, I wouldn't be able to see, because my glasses hang from them.)

Eyebrows, I have no idea.  Some animals seem to have eyebrows.  Some dogs have a stripe there of a different color even though there's fur everywhere.

  4. The shape of our ears helps us to detect which direction a sound comes from.

  5. Eyebrows most probably evolved to keep debris out of the eye.  Ears collect and amplify sound.
