Last year, when we flew to Paris, when we started to land and go lower and lower, i had EXCRUCIATING pain in both of my ears. It ended up going away as we were actually on the runway, but i was with my mom so i was okay cause i´m only 15, but this year i´m flying from Toronto to London alone, and im afraid ill start crying next to some stranger. im assuming it doesn't happen to me when i fly to Florida for instance because you fly at a much higher altitude when you are going across the ocean? is there any way to prevent this? please help me

  1. The thing that help is chewing gum, the best time to chew gum to help prevent the ears from popping is right before takeoff and landing. Another thing that will help is yawning. the reason your ears pop is because your body is trying to equalize the pressure inside and outside the body. When you go higher up in the atmosphere the air is thinner so your body has to compensate due to the pressure change. Chewing gum the whole flight will definitely help but it is not necessary to chew gum the whole flight!! It is most painful during takeoff and landing so that is when you definitely need to chew gum!

  2. chew gum or hold your nose closed and mouth closed and blow, or you may have waxy buildup in your ear see a ear doctor to have them cleaned out

  3. it happens to me too!!!! *i thought i was the only one* anways take cough and cold medicine *the little strip ones* it works!!!!!!!

  4. Chew gum when the plane starts to land.  Or learn to "pop" your ears.... yawn that can help.

The pressure inside your ears is what causes the pain.

  5. this happens to me quite often. what i do is this: i get out a huge wad of gum and start chewing like a cow, and then drink huge amounts of water. it really helps.

  6. i always chew gum when taking off and landing.  it really seems to help.   i always give it to the kids too and none of us ever seem to have any problems.

  7. start chewing gum right before you get on the plane.  good luck!
