  1. One of the best sources is Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy site:

    try

    http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/tid...

    for tides

    and

    http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/sea...

    for seasons.

I have slides available for a moon talk (not just tides) at:

    http://stardust.astro.missouri.edu/FTP/

    and download The_Moon.ppt

  2. Earth's seasons are caused by the tilt of Earth's axis. As the Earth travels around the sun, the axial tilt causes certain areas of the Earth to have more intense sunlight and the opposite side to have less intense sunlight (ie. the northern hemisphere is in summer while the southern hemisphere is in winter), If the earth was not tilted on its axis, there would be no seasons at all. Do NOT make the mistake of saying that the Earth is closest to sun during summer and farthest away during the winter, because that is simply not true.

Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of both the moon and the sun. The moon's gravitational force has more of an affect on earth's tides than the sun does, because it is so much closer to us in the solar system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tide#Tidal_... has some good diagrams of tides and actually explains it pretty well (yes its wikipedia, but its right on this one).
