I thought that sound waves couldn't travel through space? Am I just ignorant or what here... How could anything out there "hear" us if we can't make a sound??

This article explains what they found: http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20080701/sc_space/earthscriesrecordedinspace

  1. Those are radio waves whose frequency component, when shifted to audible frequencies, sound like chirps and screams.  Radio waves travel in space, sound doesn't.  But it's the frequency content that leads to the character of the signal.
