the noon altitude of the sun on solstices can be calculated for any location if the difference in degrees latitude from that location to the tropic of cancer is known. the latitude for Sioux falls, south Dakota is 43.5degreesN.

1. what is the difference in latitude between Sioux falls and the tropic of cancer? (difference between the zenith & noon solar altitude on the summer solstice equals the difference in latitude of the 2)

2. find the altitude of the sun at noon on the summer solstice in sioux falls

3. find the difference in latitude between Sioux falls and the tropic of Capricorn (remember that the tropic of Capricorn is south of the equator)

4. find the altitude of the sun at noon in Sioux falls on the winter solstice
