Some seem to think the rare earthquake today in Illinois and Indiana was brought on by the Pope visiting the US.

Yeah, I betcha he had something to do with it...

  1. I live about 20 mins from where the epicenter ( West Salem, IL) of the earthquake was and they aren't THAT rare here we are sitting on the Wabash Valley fault system and ar VERY close to the New Madrid fault line it's to be expected no matter who is in the US...nice thought though LOL!

  2. you are just being silly...

that earthquake was weird though..I am near St. Louis (I live in Southern Illinois) and that was the first time I ever felt an earthquake...Im originally from PA and we never have them there.

It woke me and boyfriend out of a sound sleep this morning.

But no...I really dont think it has to do with the Pope. ;-)

  3. Since there were no fatalities or serious injures...and since the damage to structures and property was minimal...I'm going to say there was probably no Papal involvement.  Typically when the Pope gets involved there's a wee bit more carnage...just ask the Jews...or the Spanish...or an alter boy!

That notwithstanding...C Chowdah...I think you need a new map.  Missouri IS in the Midwest...since I'm fairly confident that you'll insist on disagreeing, please check anyone of the sources I've provided below.  Just pointing that out to you, no offense.

  4. All this time, I thought I had lived in the Midwest in Kansas and Missouri. The teachers, my parents, and the media all lied to me. I thought we were talking about an earthquake that happened because a Jewish person gave a Catholic a gold plate. I think the whole idea was brought on by a dope not the Pope. I'm sure there is something you could link with the gamma ray burst that happened 7.5 billion years ago. Oh no, that's right, the devil is trying to trick us or God is an awesome scientist.

  5. If the pope caused the earthquake then I guess according to you Samantha Stevens on Bewitched is a real witch because she can make mortal humans freeze by the twitch of her lips.

  6. It woulda happened anyway. But seriously, Missouri IS in the midwest!

  7. certainly....it couldn't possibly have ANYTHING at all to do with the fault lines there, especially since there was a bigger quake few years back....that one must have been caused 'cause the Pope was GOING to be in the US

  8. Hey, don't leave out Missouri! I don't think the Pope had anything

    to do with it.

Have you heard of the New Madrid fault line?

  9. First, How is Missouri NOT the midwest?

Second, why do people associate totally unrelated stories like this and say one is affecting the other?  I saw this all the time with Katrina (it must be God punishing New Orleans for it's sins).  If that was the case why didn't God destroy Las Vegas?  or Ibiza?  Likewise, why would an earthquake (signaling the Pope arriving) be sent to the midwest?  Why wouldn't God send it to New York.....where the Pope is?

  10. thank the lord that the pope was here for a visit.   i was almost positive that george bush was going to get the blame for it.    will wonders never cease    mr doodles

  11. I seriously, seriously doubt it. Though I can see how these two stories merged.

As for this "midwest" thing, Missouri is considered by some regions to be midwest, though is not officially. The official states are Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan. Here's a photo showing the actual midwest, notice Missouri is in stripes, which means it's hardly ever included as a midwestern state. As a Chicago native, I personally have never considered it midwest, afterall it is home to "the gateway into the west".
