Earthquake rattles New Zealand Black Caps in India frantically locate loved ones – ICC World Cup 2011
New Zealand cricketers are shaken by the news of a high-intensity earthquake that struck Christchurch on Tuesday.
The New Zealand team are in Chennai, India for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 tournament and they were taken aback by the dreadful news.
The Kiwi cricketers reacted in horror over the grim news that at least 65 people have reportedly died and a lot of people are believed to be trapped.
“Watching CNN. Amazing scenes. Some worried boys here in India. Be safe,” the Kiwis veteran player, Scott Styris reacted on his official social networking account, Twitter.
The player stated that some members of the squad and the official travelling team management have their families in Christchurch and are understandably concerned.
The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) official Twitter account posted a statement saying that the team is in contact with their near and dear ones.
“The team woke early in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 to the news of another Christchurch earthquake. Thoughts are with everyone and hoping all are OK,” the NZC official Twitter account read.
The city was hit by a powerful 7.1 earthquake back in September 2010 in the early hours of the morning; hence there were no reports of any destruction.
However, this time, the earthquake struck the city, leaving scenes of mass destruction. There are scores of people reported to be missing, with floors of a five-star hotel caving in on top of each other.
The earthquake had a 6.3 magnitude as the country has declared a state of emergency. People are even trapped in Christchurch Cathedral and it is reportedly “severely damaged.”
The Black Caps coach, John Wright, and right-arm medium fast bowler Hamish Bennett have links to the area. Wicket-keeper batsman Brendon McCullum is also believed to have family members in the south island of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754.
The Black Cap’s media manager released a statement confirming that the family members are safe.
“All immediate friends and family are okay, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that there have been fatalities.”
New Zealand’s women cricket team is reportedly safe, as they were training at Lincoln University, which is situated 22 kilometres away from Christchurch when the earthquake struck.
