Hi, I am planning to an off-grid eco-build in the south-east of the UK. I am currently exploring different techniques and materials, but need help with deciding. Which do you recommend? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Thanks, all constructive answers appreciated!

  1. I would combine the different types to what suits the environment your in. importing trash tires uses fuel and energy use whats on hand.

as for advantages earthship is great for areas with a lot of clay and sand not so much for richer soils or rocky soil as they tend to washout in heavy rain. straw bale is covered in cement and does very well in dry areas but I've seen then in canada. they insulate vary well but tend to take longer to dry they are also much prettier and can be built to enormos size. you may also consider under ground. log cabin, geodesic dome or yurt. good luck with the greening.

  2. I also want to build an Earthship on my land, but I don't know if the local government will allow me to do so.  I know that it's my land and I pay my rent (land tax) , but I still need permission !  The best use for old tires are house's and to make electricity.

  3. the problem with straw builds is insects rodents and moisture i have read in the book about the use of old tires  for the walls dig out a side cliff and fill the tires with the dirt to make the walls  R value is great no need to worry about critters invading or having a place to call home also if the straw got damp would there be a problem of spontaneous combustion

  4. Great for you!

    I hope I can help...here goes...

I would go with an earthship. Though they would both take a long time to build, the earthships can generally be made larger, keep valuable resources and so called "trash" from being thrown in the landfills, and would not require tearing up the land to obtain the necessary vast amounts of mud and straw for building. Plus, I have seen some pretty cool looking earthships!

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't it get pretty wet in the UK? I would think the straw and mud would take even longer to cure and set than usual.

BUT! all of this is just my opinion!

may i recommend a website with many good resources for your decision..... I would visit Care2.com.

the best of luck to you!!!!
