Question:

Easiest Quilt pattern?

by  |  earlier

Hello, I just bought a sewing machine and would love to sew a really simple, easy but pretty quilt. I have no experience and no idea how to start. Should I just cut out 6" squares and sew them together? I don't want the quilt to be complicated. I think I would loose interest and never finish it...

Please help....

Thank you all

  1. The easiest traditional pattern is probably a strip quilt of some kind. Chinese Coins, Roman Stripe, that sort of thing. Here are some instructions:

A variation of that is the string quilt, which is another easy block that's great for beginners:

The Rail Fence block is an excellent starting point for new quilters:

You could also check out some of the "modern" quilt books like Denyse Schmidt Quilts (check out the Flickr group for this book here:

  2. Check out the site:http://www.appliquequiltdesigns.com for information on quilting.  The section on Quilt Blocks it gives good information on basic quilt blocks, such as the four patch and nine patch.  Also there is a section on quilt book reviews that reviews excellent books to help you learn to quilt..

  3. Squares are easy, you could also to strips of fabric. Just make sure you don't try to do something to big and get bored. Try a pillow or a baby quilt. Pillows are great because you will always use them and you can make a bunch of different patterns. Hint: Use your Iron!

  4. One of the prettiest quilts I've ever made was just made from 5" squares, and was just tied instead of quilted.  A very simple quilt. What made it so pretty was my choice of fabrics. I used pinks, burgundy, greens and tans, but all the colors had similar (medium) values, none were too dark, too light, or too bright, and they all worked together well. I use it on my king-size bed and it is lovely. I now have a quilting machine, but that simple, tied block quilt is one of my favorites. It was very easy to make. There are easier patterns too, such as those already mentioned. Just make sure you choose fabric and colors that you like, and, if you are a fabric junkie like me, you will enjoy putting it together. Good luck.

  5. The drop-dead, easiest quilt pattern is a whole cloth quilt.  You buy a quilt panel and use it as your quilt top.  It is a good way to get started and gain confidence with your sewing machine.  I used the panel from the fabric line Baby Geniuses by Benartex for a baby quilt for a co-worker.  She loved it!

If you want to sew together a top, a good choice is Streak of Sunshine at the Quiltville web site.  The quilt pattern is small, easy, quick and very versatile.  Directions can be found here:

  6. Buy a packet of charm squares (mixed colors) and sew together.  You will need more than one pack probably.  Decide how large you want it and then add fabric for border and backing.

  7. That sounds good!

  8. Listed below is the website that has lessons for a sampler quilt and tutorial.  Great website.
