Question:

Easiest way to book a train trip?

I've never taken the train before, but I want to book a train trip from Moorpark, California to South Lake Tahoe sometime in June, but I'm finding the Amtrak website very frustrating. It keeps telling me the route isn't possible. That's not true if there's a station both in Moorpark and in South Lake Tahoe, right?

  1. 1-800-USA-RAIL.

The web site is confusing and difficult.  If you're willing to invest six or seven minutes, a real, live person will actually talk to you, help you plan your trip and even book your reservation.

    Very easy and very economical.

But, you'll probably ride train #14, the Coast Starlight, to Oakland or Sacramento, then change trains to train #6, detrain at Truckee, California, and either taxi or bus to Tahoe.  Amtrak may have their bus service running to Tahoe.  But, they'll tell ya.

There is no line to Lake Tahoe.  The nearest station is Truckee.  From there, a twenty mile drive or so to Tahoe.

Or, and this is probably the best way to assure transportation to destination, take train #6 all the way to Reno (about forty miles beyond Truckee) and hop a bus to Tahoe.

    Have a safe trip !

  2. It may not be a direct connection, you may need to transfer at some point along the line.  Contact Amtrak and speak with an Amtrak representative;1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) .
