Well, the easiest way to format your pc, (un)fortunately is to buy vista(if that is not the OS that you have bought your PC with) and boot your PC with it. Because only with Vista everything gets taken care for you. That's it.

IF you want to format your PC installing windows XP, you are going to have to deal with drivers, and very long windows updates as well as with the very outdated software that comes bundled with it(IE6, media player 8...)

I'm not an MS employee, just a realist.
