We are going to be putting up a deck soon and we pretty much live on a quarry. Some areas of dirt are 3 to 4 feet deep other areas are only 6 inches deep. Does anyone know the best way to get posts through stone? We will need to go a minimum 36 inches into the ground.

  1. If you really need to go through the stone you could try a jack hammer. I like the idea posted of setting on the stone as long as the stone is under the soil - enough so that you can set your posts in concrete.

Do check your local building code. If you have a city engineer, that could be a good source of local information.

  2. You buy round forms and pour concrete in 'em.

    Five gallon buckets can work.

You dont sink the posts in rock you build the form on top and then set post's

i would have a rethink and go for the gravel between natural stone  rough slabs as it will complement your quarry landscape and less hassle and maintainance

but if you go for the decking then the advice above seems pretty sound to me.

  4. Set the posts on the stone not through it. It will act as a foundation and should support the building quite nicely. I promise

  5. I have to agree with DON'T Bother.

If there is some stability issue, use Pier block on a level surface, even blocks with brackets embedded. Certainly the weight of the deck will hold you down. I'm curious as to why

    6 x 6?

You can adjust level, in the soil variances, and pouring footers where necessary, and perhaps get the pier block with adjustable brackets, for fine tuning. Most bracketed pier block will be sold to accommodate 4 x 4 however.

One of the things you'll avoid is any frost line issues, however you might still have code issues to deal with.
