East takes on Metro at Sports Fest; Wins 3-1: Volleyball news
The East volleyball girls team was able to hand out a defeat to Metro on Monday night by 3-1. The match was part of the Sports Fest and was played at the Bethel’s Weikamp Center. By the time that East had done their job, the final set scores stood at: 21-25,
25-21, 25-16 and 25-21.
East started off the match trying to come to terms with the skill of Metro and it took them the loss of the opening set to come back strong in the match. Once they had won the second set by putting up a commendable fight, the next two sets came easy for
East. What is more impressive is the fact that the East was playing the match without a coach and were two players short. Despite the setback, East proved that it can tackle pressure situations expertly.
The East coach, Mark Heeter, the junior varsity coach at Northwood made the following comments about the performance of the East when the match had reached its close: "The girls went out and recruited some other kids today. And apparently they got the right
ones. Most of these girls are two and three-sport athletes and they are all competitors. They're all really good athletes. And when you have good athletes, they can make things happen."
The start of the opening game went fairly even with both Metro and East trying to assert their dominance. No one could predict where the ball would fall until the final stages of the set when Metro was able to score the last five points and bag the initial
set for themselves at 25-21.
After the loss of the first set, East started off the second set with much more focus and determination. East was able to stay in control until they made a 5-0 run in the end that brought them the second set win at 25-21.
With the second game in their bag, the confidence level of East propelled them to take the next two sets as well at 25-16 and 25-21 respectively.
The players that stood most prominent in East’s lineup were Melanie Meyer, Bri Moore and Kaci Heeter. Meyer was able to keep the pressure on Metro by posting a total of 13 kills in the entire match. She also kept the score board ticking by making four points
on service aces. Moore contributed by putting in eight kills and two aces whereas Heeter registered five kills.
On the Metro side, Chelsea Toth and Melissa Macellari were able to make the highest number of kills for their team at nine a piece. Toth also scored two points by making service aces. Macellari on the other hand also made her presence felt by making seven
blocks for Metro.
