Question:

Eastern Box Turtle?

I'm asking again because last time I got slightly...hostile answers. Maybe i should have specified more information: the turtle had graffiti on its shell and was injured and unconcious. My aunt put her in my care and I brought her to the vet [which cost me a bundle] and now I want to return her to her home. I'm just not sure how to do it. What my aunt did may not have been the best thing for the turtle -- I'm really not a turtle expert although I probably would have picked the unconcious turtle up from out of a fairly busy highway too, I guess. My main concern is fixing whatever went wrong and returning the turtle back to its home. I don't have a car so i can't travel down to Pennsylvania where it was picked up. I live in Northern NJ. I've called a couple places and none of the are accepting turtles. I don't think i'm supposed to just release her back into a park or anything. I just need some guidelines -- I want to make sure I return her in a place most suitable to her needs.

  1. contact mid-atlantic turtle and tortoise society to see if they have any volunteers in your area and what you should actually do with the turtle.

by the way, you have asked this question in three different ways, first your dad brought home a turtle, then your aunt brought home a turtle, now your aunt found an injured turtle.  you cannot seem to get the answer you want.

  2. I keep a colony of rescued box turtles, and would be willing to add him to my outdoor enclosure.  If you are interested in shipping him to me (I will pay the shipping costs) please e-mail me.

  3. like the first answer stated after all its been through its best if you find someone to care for it ot if your willing you can care for ot yourself just read lots of caresheest and research. if you cant care for it then call a turtle breeder they will surely keep it. good luck with the turtle!

  4. After all the turtle has been through you might try and find a person who has turtles and is willing to take it in.

  5. Wow! What kind of graffitti was on the poor thing?

I just traveled through PA yesterday. And home to NH today from Morristown NJ...

Where was the Turtle found in PA? How big is she?

Great that you got the turtle the care it deserved...

How long has it been that your aunt and you had the turtle?

It would orginally been great if the owner whom if they mourned over the lost of there pet got to have it returned.

But how were you going to go about find out where its home is???

If your aunt can't pick it up and go around and check I would say find a suitable home for the turtle and be happy you do all you could...

  6. Assuming its fully recovered, a box turtle should do fine in just about any heavily wooded forest preserve in your area.    Perhaps call someone at your county Forest Preserve District and have them suggest a place.

Failing that, they make decent pets.

  7. There is a rescue in Long Island New york.

You can get in touch with her and ask her what to do.

She may know some one close to you that can check the turtle out to make sure its up to shipping if you want to ship it to someone that can care for it.

If the Rescue is close enough to you, maybe you could get it to her.

Please do not just let it go any where.

Box turtles are homing and could die trying to find its way home.

If it can not get back to with in a mile from where it come from, let some one experienced with box turtles take it.

    good luck

  8. You could call your local vet and get some numbers for wildlife rehabilitators.
