The first day of the CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition between Eastern Province and Boland was quite eventful where fans witnessed some outstanding bowling from both teams at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth.
Boland, who chose to field first on winning the toss made inroads on the penultimate delivery of the third over when East Province opener, MBA http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598, was run out for one.
DJ White and skipper CN Ackermann then forged a commendable partnership, with both batsmen keeping the scoreboard ticking without taking too many risks.
After conceding 58 runs, Boland made another breakthrough when Ackermann was dismissed with 24 runs to his name.
In the next over, White also departed after he was trapped in front of stumps by Williams on 26.
With the dangerous pair out of their way, it was time for Boland to tighten their grip as they grabbed a few more wickets.
By the time Eastern Province had posted 90 runs, they had already lost seven of their batsmen and were struggling in front of the opposition.
Eastern Province crumbled after posting a first innings total of 118 in 38.3. Meanwhile, from Boland http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Williams-c98034 were outstanding as they took three wickets each to rattle the batting side.
Boland had an equally disappointing start to their innings as they lost three batsmen with just 31 runs on the board.
Skipper EC Kriek and wicketkeeper/batsman RCC Canning forged an impressive partnership with the two batsmen taking the score to 83 before Magala dismissed Kriek for 20.
Canning was then joined by TWR Cloete as the two batsmen raced to 129 before this partnership also met its end on the demise of Canning, who found his way back to the pavilion after smashing a brilliant knock of 63 runs.
Boland batsmen were then left completely surprised as Eastern Province made a late comeback and restricted them on 162.
SSB Magala was the most exciting bowler of the day as he nabbed four batsmen in 16 overs and was the most economic bowler for his side.
Eastern Province then ended the day with seven on the board and one wicket down in their second innings.
