At stumps on the first day of the three-day CSA Provincial Competition between Easterns and Free State, the Easterns trail by 75 runs with ten wickets in hand, at Willowmoore Park, Benoni.
Free State, who were invited to bat first, had a decent start to their first innings with openers LN Mosena and MN Erlank forging a stand of 21 runs.
Easterns drew first blood when Liebisch clean-bowled Mosena for 11. With the opener back in the pavilion, it was time for wicketkeeper/batsman, RS Second, to take the field.
However, the second-wicket partnership failed to achieve much as it came to its end with just 34 runs on the board when the number-three batsman perished after playing a meagre innings of five runs.
Then with 39 runs, skipper PJ van Biljon also bid farewell after he had amassed only four runs, this was then followed by the departure of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Charles-Lennox-James-c44309 Pienaar, who did not score.
As the situation seemed getting worse for the batting side, P Botha crafted a pleasant innings alongside Erlank as the duo took the score to 51 before Erlank became the next batsman to find his way back to the pavilion. He scored 19 runs before losing his wicket.
Botha was then joined by RK Terblanche for a short while before he also hit the showers with only an innings of nine runs under his belt.
SC http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Robert-Cowdrey-c60631 Schalkwyk and Botha forged the next intimidating partnership as the batsmen dominated the bowlers by denying them their wickets and hammering the ball out of town.
This partnership took the score to 165 before SC van Schalkwyk was dismissed after playing a tentative knock of 28 runs.
The tail enders were disappointing, while Botha hammered a staggering knock of 92 runs to play a leading role in helping his side reach 179 at the end of the innings.
From Easterns, SW Liebisch, was marvellous as he decapitated the batting side by taking five wickets in 14 overs.
Easterns then raced to 104 in their first innings with TM Bodibe and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jonathan-Clare-c1729 Fourie unbeaten on 46 and 45.
