Question:

Easy 10: Should We Add A Line Or Open A New Verizon Account?

My boyfriend just ended a cell phone contract with Metro PC and wants to switch over to Verizon. (Everyone in his family and my family has it, so it makes the most sense for him to go with Verizon as his cell phone carrier). He is 23 years old and so, naturally, he was just going to get his own plan. Well, I saw the "Add a Line for 9.99" at a kiosk in the mall, and now I wonder if it would just be smarter for him to add onto his elderly Aunt's account. (He helps to take care of her 5 days a week and I don't think she would mind). My question is, economically, would it be cheaper for him in the long run to add onto her plan or start his own. I don't know what kind of a plan that she has, but he would want unlimited texting and lots of minutes (for his small business). What do you all think? What is the smartest thing for him to do? Thanks so much, everyone!!! :) Have a SUPER HAPPY DAY!!!!

  1. All depends on how much he talks.

The $9.99 only applies to family plans. If the Aunt is by herself on the contract, that is a single plan -- not family. Family costs $10 extra anyhow and mininum number of lines is 2 -- but she will need to resign a new contract for 2 years + whatever she had left. Depending on when you lock in your contract, some promotions give you 700-1200 minutes for a $39.99/month family plan contract.

Also, unlimited tex = $10 more. But, if he has a high end phone, he might want to consider to get a data plan ($29.99) which allows him to sync all of his business e-mails to his phone 24/7 if his business is that intensive.
