Viviana Zelizer is an author who has written about money and the use of it. I would like to know what she meant by distinguishing "gifts" from "market transfers" in her essay, "Gifted Money. The Social Meaning of Money". Thanks

  1. The point of Zelizer's argument is just to acknowledge that different forms of exchange carry different meanings.  Gifting carries certain social obligations, so that during the exchange of $10 "gifts", there are different things being exchanged, and mediating that exchange, than say in the exchange of $10 for a movie ticket.

The book you're talking about challenges the economics-oriented assumption that monetary exchange in all of its forms take priority over and/or deteriorate social relationships.  Instead, Zilizer emphasizes the "social construction of market money" (from the text, page 34).

  2. When you "gift" money -- you won't have to pay the taxes on it.  If you "market transfer" money -- someone will have to pay the taxes.  I believe she is showing you the best way to get a tax break.
