Question:

Easy Alternative to Electric/Plastic Razors?

Hey. I've used electric razors (don't like them) and I've used plastic razors that you throw away. I don't like either method of getting a good shave, because I end up throwing away razors that go to landfills.

I heard that "safety" razors can be bought and the blades can be purchased and then recycled.

1) Where can I find a "safety" razor, easily?

2) Where can you recycle "safety" razor blades?

3) How much do "safety" razors cost?

  1. I like those old-timey medicine cabinets that had the slit in the back to drop the dull razor into the wall.  You can never fill up a wall full of razors in a lifetime.

  2. Your environmentalism is great but these so called safety razors can hurt you if you're not careful. On balance a good electric shaver like my Braun Activator is probably better for your skin than a safety razor and better for the environment if used over many years than plastic disposable razors.

  3. i faced this very problem not long ago so i have vowed never to buy desposable ones again and my b/f has given up shaving all to gether lol.

i dont think there really is an eco razor. if you dont use an electric one then you still throw away the blaid and if you use an electirc one then your using energy. i would say either dont shave or use a rechargable one.

i cant remember whcih company it was but i stumbled upon one company which does 100% recyclable razors

  4. You can find razors made from recycles materials at http://www.recycline.com/index.html  The great thing about these razors is that they also come with an envelope to send them back to the company after you use them and they make them into some sort of building material.  You can also usually find them at most drugstores and "green" stores.

  5. I use a safety razor and love it. It doesn't damage my skin anymore then any other razor you simply need to learn to use it correctly. Short, lighter strokes and be extra careful around the ankle and knee.

You can find safety razors on Amazon and Ebay as well as specialty shaving stores online and at some malls.

You can recycle the blades any place you can recycle scrap metal and steel.

My razor only cost $30 with a ten pack of blades and mine was brand new. You can find more expensive ones if you want but I just wanted something simple and inexpensive. You can buy packs of $100 blades on ebay for a great rate.

It's cheaper, better for you and better for the environment. I got some nicks when I first started but I got nicks when I first started shaving with a plastic razor too. Now I can do it quickly and without nicking myself. You can check out my full review and my recipe for homemade shaving cream on my blog
