What is the value of x?

−5x + 5y = 15

5x + 6y = −59

  1. Combine the two equations and I would solve for y first because it would be simplier...

    -5x and 5y cancel eachother out giving you...

    11y = -44

    y = -4

    Then plug in y and solve for x

    -5x + 5(-4) = 15

    -5x - 20 = 15

    -5x = 35

    x = -7

    Then you can plug in x and y to check your answers:

    −5(-7) + 5(-4) = 15

    5(-7) + 6(-4) = −59
