calvin wants to make a gutter with a rectangular cross section by folding up strips of equal width on a long sheet of metal that is 26 cm wide.

the larger the cross sectional dimensions, the greater the capacity of the gutter. find the dimensions that will maximize the gutter's capacity

  1. any time you need to maximize area or anything a sqare is your answer. So all sides would be of equal width. 26/4  


  2. I agree with the above, a square should do best, 26 / 4 = 6.5.

    However, if your making a gutter that is open ended, I would assume 26 / 3 which is 8 and 2/3, kind of messy. Probably the square thing, just seems like a tricky question.
