  2. all of your appliances "energy star rated"

  3. Find a place in your area that sells gently used building materials, or go to a freecycle website.  Some folks remodel constantly so you can use their stuff from five years ago.  You might be able to count that for something -- plus you'll save money and you won't have to consume anything extra.  You could even do this with your other green purchases - buy them used.  There's too much new c**p in the world.

Also, you can put in geothermal heating.  That's a biggy, but I think you have to do it before construction is too far along.

    And get a composter!

  4. wormery , compost heap

  5. Ever consider a heat pump or a hot water heating system? If you install rain gutters bury the downspouts underground and have it lead to where you are going to put your gardens so they will benefit from a good rain.  Then there is always a trash compactor.  While your going to all the trouble of turning your home green don't forget to add some bird feeders to feed the birds.

  6. Low or no VOC paint; Composting container in your backyard; Soy based "blown in" insulation; carpet tiles made from recycled fibers; wood flooring from sustainable forests; Energy Star appliances. That's six. Do you need more? If so, I'm sure I can think up some more.

  7. go search online for "recycled hardwood" to find hardwood floors that are eco-friendly. Use natural fiber products for your curtains, and couch covering and cousins. Sometimes going to your local handicraft store will have huge amounts of cheap natural cloth. Grow trees that are native to the area you are living in and don't use pesticides on your gardens, grow your own vegies, like tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant etc.

  8. Recycled wallpaper, biodegradable plastic siding, skylights, a garden that you can eat from...that's all I got.

  9. ahh put in green carpet and paint house green...there

  10. A Sunfrost refrigerator.  This one uses less power than all others.

CFL's are fine, but look at LED's, these use less than 5 watts and last for 50 years, a life time.

Stabler washing machines are the lowest power users and have a great tech support, so you can fix it, made for the Renewable Energy market.

  11. Composting

    Weatherstripping

    Recycling

    Front-Loading Washing Machines

    Drought-Friendly Landscaping

    Renewable Building Materials

  12. why dont you go to the building suppliers and tell them about this house you are building? I am sure they would be happy to sell you the stuff you need? maybe you should of thought about this before you started building? And what is so environmental about astro turf?? This question actually has a slight ring of homework to it.....?
