3 ANSWERS

  1. 2x^4 - 3x^3 - 11x^2 + 14x + 4

  2. (2x² - 5x - 1)(x² + x - 3)

    factor each

    x² + x - 3

    quadratic equation:

    to solve ax + by + c = 0

    x = [-b ±√(b²-4ac)] / 2a

    x = [-1 ±√(1+12)] / 2

    x = [-1 ±√(13)] / 2

    x = - 1/2 + √13/2 or

          - 1/2 - √13/2

    x² + x - 3 = (x + 1/2 + √13/2)(x + 1/2 - √13/2)

    2x² - 5x - 1

    x = [5 ±√(25+4*2)] / 4

    x = [5 ±√(32)] / 4

    x = [5 ±4√2] / 4

    x = 5/4 + √2, 5/4 - √2

    2x² - 5x - 1 = (x - 5/4 - √2)(x - 5/4 + √2)

    putting them back together

    (2x² - 5x - 1)(x² + x - 3)

    (x + 1/2 + √13/2)(x + 1/2 - √13/2) (x - 5/4 - √2)(x - 5/4 + √2)

    if I didn't make an arith mistake

    .

  3. (2x^2 - 5x - 1)(x^2 + x - 3)

    = 2x^4 + 2x^3 - 6x^2 - 5x^3 - 5x^2 + 15x - x^2 - x + 3

    = 2x^4 - 3x^3 -12x^2 +15x + 3
