Friend and I go out to a bar, get 2 cheese burgers and fries along with 3 beers for him and 4 for me. He picks up the tab and the total is $17.28. How much would you tip keeping the following in mind?

A) We were there between 2:30-3hrs.

B) The place was 2/3 of the way full, no super busy, but slightly busy.

C) It was a deal night, beers were a $1.50 each and the burger and fries were $3.

D) Overall the server was nice and on top of coming with more drink when we were about 3/4's done with a our glass.

E) This was my first time there, but my friend goes to this Monday deal event 2 out of 4 Mondays in a month.

F) We ate about 7 cereal bowls of the free popcorn that you can help yourself to by the entrance door to go with our beers after our meal.

All said and done with bill and tip what would have been the total you would have left?

  1. If you were there for 2.30 to 3 hrs, the bill is a little over  $17,  because it was discounted, you probably would have paid 30% to 40% more.   I would have just given a tip not per the amount of the total bill, but per hour - so go figure $2 hour, round it off to $6, that will make your server happy, make it $8 then she knows you know how to tip.  $10 - she will be so thankful she was not rude to you, because she would know she did a great job.

BTW are you still thinking of how much to tip her?  Did you leave any tip the last time you were there?   Are you going back after all the answers come in and the best answer gets chosen then go back there and tip her properly?   JUST CURIOUS

  2. Zero.

This "tipping" custom is a throwback to some ancient economic era or something.  I figure if they want money, they can ask.  If they want to give you bowls of free popcorn, fine, thank you, but don't let people throw a "guilt trip" on you.  They don't run restaurants, or any other business for that matter, as a charity.  I'm sure the server did a fine job.  The server is employed by the corporation, not you.

  3. At least $5.00, good service & good food prices are hard to come by! You would have spent that much or more on a regular nite out for sure.

  4. $35. Those girls deserve it.

  5. my rule of thumb is to double the tax and add a little, but being you were there for a while I would leave 15 - 20 bucks.

  6. I would have left thirty dollars or even forty (total), but then again I'm in the service industry.  You sat at her table for 3 hrs taking space that she could have sat essentially 3 times (average is 1hr/tabletop).  You made her lose out on 3 other tips.  Depending on the state you live in she probably doesn't make even minimum wage- infact most states have a server wage, which is much lower than minimum wage-(just something to keep in mind).

  7. well, with the info that you provided, and it seems that your server was right on top of things to bring your drinks and you didnt have to wave him/her down to get them,  and if i was in a generous mood, which i usually am being a former fooodservice worker, i would have left $25.00

  8. 20 bucks

  9. I give her about $20 bucks.

  10. I bartend, and sometimes have to make/serve food if I'm the only one there... so I know how aggrivating it can be when people sit there for a few hours and leave you a lousy tip. and because of that, I'd say I'm a pretty good tipper. I appreciate it when people leave me generous tips for the work I do, running around and keeping everyone happy.. and in you situation, I would have probably left $10. But I also always ALWAYS tip at least $5, even if my boyfriend stop in a bar and have one drink each... He used to think I was kind of excessive, but a few weeks ago we stopped in a bar that happened to call last call about 10min before we walked in, we kindly asked the bartender for 2 shots, she graciously poured them, despite the fact they were trying to get people out, and out of appreciation, he left a $10 tip. more than the shots even cost. I was so proud of him. haha.

anyways in reguards to your question.. at least $8. IMO
