If we represent people by 'p , suitcases by 's' and blocks by 'b' ,

1p + 5s = 4b

3p + 1s = 7b

5p = ?

Rearranging the equations , we have :

1p = 4b - 5s ; 1p = (7b - 1s)/3

Thus , we can equate the two :

4b - 5s = (7b - 1s)/3

3(4b - 5s) = (7b - 1s)

12b - 15s = 7b - 1s i.e. 5b = 14s.

Substituting this value of 'b' in the first equation , we get :

1p + 5s = 4b i.e. 1p = 4b - 5s i.e. 1p = 4 * 14s/5 - 5s

1p = 56s/5 - 5s i.e. 1p = 31s/5

5p = 31s/5 * 5 = 31s.

Thus 5 people will be balanced by 31 suitcases.
