Easy to make Japanese Food??

Question

I am doing a country report on Japan and I wanted to bring sushi in or california rolls.But then I thought, Nah thats too UNoriginal, sooo, i was wondering...any good japanese foods that're easy to make and kid friendly?

And It cant be to complicated because, if I make something and bring it to the class, I have to demonstrate how to make it.

Also, it doesnt matter is theres knives or cutting involved, my teacher can handle the knives

try vegetable tempura

it's easy...all you do is get slices, choped, or cut vegetables and fry them

oh well sushi is easy to make.

You go to Asian grocery store and get SUSHINOMOTO it is white powder and it contains vinegar and sugar.

Just follow the instruction.

Ready cucumber and canned tuna.

1Peel  outside of cucumbers and cut.

2Add mayo with tuna.

That is it!



Oh, do not forget seaweed too.

Usually it is big square so cut it by 4squares.

Then add rice and tuna and cucumbers. and roll it like megaphone.  It is called temakizushi.



My friends love it so I think kids would like it too.  Even if some students are vegetarian, it is OK.  This recipe does not use any meat.

OR why don't you make curry and rice.  They are so good too.  Many kids love curry and rice a lot and it is easy to make too.

There are hot, medium hot, mild.  If kids cannot eat hot stuff, choose mild.  It is not hot at all.  Then, still they feel hot, add honey.  Then it is easier to eat than before.

You need carrots, potatoes and onion.  That is it.  I know curry is sold at wal-mart so you should check it out!!  It is easy and tasty.

Rice balls, onigri is a good basic japanese snack to make. You stream some rices with salt added in the water and leave it out to dry. Get some dry sea weed(usually in chinese supermarket) and roll it into a ball with the sea weed holding it.

onigiri! It's absolutely awesome. There's a trillion different types you can make, so look up the recipe. They're absolutely excellent.

Personally, I put stir fried onion and zucchini in mine. Was awesome.

here you are:

sushi layer

4 1/2 cups water

1/3 cup rice vinegar

1/4 cup sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 1/4 cups short-grain rice(or Pearl)

1/4 cup rice wine or dry sherry(sake)

2 medium lemons, sliced paper thin and seeded

1 tablespoon small capers, drained and rinsed

1(3ounce)package of paper thin slices smoked salmon

8 ounces small cooked shrimp

4 nori

1 1/2 cups cucumbers, with peel, thinly sliced(about 1/2 cucumber)

1/2 cup sliced green onions

1/2 cup carrots, coarsely grated

1 large red pepper, diced

Directions

1Bring water, vinegar, sugar and salt to a boil in medium saucepan.

2Stir in rice.

3Reduce heat, cover, simmer 15 to 20 minutes until water absorbed and rice is cooked.

4Stir in rice wine.

5Cool to room temperature.

6Makes about 8 cups rice.

7Line 9 x 13 inch pan with plastic wrap.

8Arrange thin even layer of lemon slices in bottom of pan.

9Sprinkle with capers.

10Cover 1/2 of pan with smoked salmon and 1/2 with shrimp.

11Using wet hands, pack about 2 1/2 cups cooked rice in an even layer on top.

12Lay 2 sheets of nori, trimmed to fit in single layer, on rice.

13Cover nori with cucumber and green onion.

14Pack 2 1/2 cups rice on top.

15Layer carrot and red pepper.

16Cover with remaining rice.

17Lay 2 sheets of nori, trimmed to fit in single layer, on rice.

18Cover with plastic wrap directly on surface.

19Set another 9 x 13 inch pan on sushi and press down firmly to compress layers evenly.

20Chill 2 hours.

21Remove top plastic wrap.

22Invert sushi onto cutting surface.

23Remove remaining plastic wrap.

24Use sharp, wet, clean knife for each cut.

3 Hostess Twinkies

assorted dried fruits

assorted fruity decorative candies

2 green fruit leather

dried mango(looks like pickled ginger)

Directions

1Slice Twinkies into pieces about an inch tall.

2Slice fruit rollups in strips to be long enough and wide enough to wrap around the Twinkie pieces.

3Place dried fruits and candies into the cream filling.

4Place Twinkie rolls on a plate or in a Bento box.

5Garnish with strips of dried mango to resemble pickled ginger if you wish.

As you know sushi is the rice, not the fish and other tidbits.  But you may not know that you can serve sushi as a salad.  I was served it this way in a Japanese home.

You make the rice and then flavor it with vinegar and sugar moving it around with these beautiful bamboo paddles and an equally beautiful wooden bowl.  Then it can be moved to a serving bowl scattered with a little wasabi, cucumber, cooked carrots, pieces of avocado, scallion, pickled ginger and, for the adventuresome kids, cooked shrimp.  It's delicious and very Japanese.

I like to cut the carrots and cucumber into little stick shapes.  Your Mom can do that at home.  The important part of the demo is the rice.
