I'm a pretty skilled sewer I've mad pajamas and baby clothes among other things. This year my mom informed me that I would be making my school clothes I'm really excited about it. I have a unique sense of style I would call it a mix between Rainbow Bright, goth/punk (occasionally) hippie, Humboldt hunny (If your familiar with the term) and casual (T-Shirt and blue jeans) links to patterns or a site I can order patterns from.

  1. It is not just about the patterns....you can make the coolest things from simple patterns using unique fabrics, or embellishments.

When I was taking my design classes I was not the best at sewing or design, but they actually gave me an award that had not been given before for most creative use of textiles. (Among other things my creations consisted of a fur dress and matching fringed jacket, and a denim jacket with 1500 safety pins to cover the seam lines)

Let the fabrics speak to you, and don't be afraid to do unusual things with the ones you find.

Shop Ebay for some unique fabrics not found at your local fabric store.

  2. It's lots of fun to go to your local fabric store and page through the pattern books. It's also cheaper than buying online, because patterns are always on sale. Then you can pick out your fabrics at the same time.

  3. Oh, excellent!  I couldn't make my school uniform, but when I went off to boarding school, I made a pile off stuff to take with me: dressing gown, Victorian style night dresses, loads of things...  They lasted the whole 4 years I was away.  It is great to have things that are that little bit different from the usual.  :)  My own style has developed since those days (um...  way back in the early 70's, I'm afraid!) to something more like a power-dressed Professor Trelawney!  :D

Here are some fun sites for free downloadable patterns:  I'm sure that with the right fabric choices and trimmings, you can get your style just how you like it.  It's a lot of fun to do.

And here are some pattern sites I generally find a little more interesting than the usual Butterick/McCall's/Simplicity stuff, which can be a bit ordinary:

    http://fitzpatterns.myshopify.com/ (pay for and download)

MOST patterns come with an indication of how difficult they are to make up, suggestions about the type of fabric to use, and a list of notions (zips, buttons, etc), so you should manage just fine, especially if mum is a good dressmaker and will be on hand to sort out any problems that might arise.  If you get into trouble, just ask, and someone will pop up with a solution or two.
