Easy way to cut refrigerator and freezer energy use?

No matter the age of the fridge or freezer, many meats and food products are boxed or display packed in styrofoam and plastic.

Simply remove those items from their packaging, put contents in a plastic bag or ziplock type bag and the savings begin by making your fridge/freezer work less by not having to cool through the packaging...a good example, some ground turkey packaged in styrofoam base with a plastic cover took four hours to freeze solid where the one repackaged in a ziplock bag took only 45 minutes!

The thinner the packaging the better!

Works great, simple and affordable and your appliance will last longer and you will save lots on energy!

  1. Package food in small packets that you can use at one time instead of defreezing the whole amount and then returning the rest.  Open the fridge or freezer less often.

Place and label packets for easy access so that you find them immediately and you can close the fridge sooner.

  2. Don't use a fridge. Live naturally.

  3. Another good idea is to keep the entire space full.  You can use newspaper or jugs of water, for example.  Once they are frozen they help keep the entire space cold by decreasing air exchange when the door gets opened.

  4. Buyrefridgerators and freezers marked with a blue- or black-and-white ENERGY STAR sticker.
