Question:

Easy way to put mental images onto paper?

Basically, I like doodling a lot. Every time I usually have a good picture in my head, but when I go to put it onto paper I always mess up or it's not what I have in my head.

I know this probably comes easy to naturally gifted artists, but is there an easy way for me to do this, or anything to help at least?

  1. Putting mental images on paper is a natural ability. You can either do it or you can't. Sorry.

  2. You could write what your "mental images" are in words, and then have them as a reference to work with. Or, perhaps you could find an image similar to what you are thinking of and change it slightly, so you have an outside reference to work with.

If these don't work, the best thing you can do is practice.

    Good Luck!

  3. From my perspective, you need to tap into your imagination better. Try the words, yes, but also just try doodling. I suggest this to some students. Get a roll of paper and pull out a very long sheet. Spread it out on the floor; begin to draw on one end and keep going until you finish using up the whole paper. Roll it up and then put it away until later or the next day. Look at it with a fresh eye and see what your brain does with the stimuli.
