Easy ways to keep spiders and pests out that arent too costly?

i think weve got a spider nest somewhere in our house and i just cant take it anymore! i need a way to get rid of em!

ive read through questions on here before about getting rid of spiders and the one thing that seems to crop up in most of the answers are conkers. apparently spiders hate the smell of them and people have said they place them round the house.
