Question:

Easyjet - have you ever booked an additional seat for your infant?

Can anyone tell me if I book a seat for my infant (as opposed to having her on my lap), will she get the normal 20kg baggage allowance, or is that per adult, not per seat?

Their website and customer services are the worst I've ever encountered. I hate, hate, hate them.

  1. Can't say for sure, but I'd imagine so.  I mean presumably you're paying for the seat and wouldn't necessarily have to say they're an infant.  If it was a child over 2 they'd have the normal baggage allowance.

    Little bit extravagent though isn't it - considering the child will be on your/your partners lap most of the journey anyway!!

  2. If you book and pay for a seat which will be charged as an adult fare I presume (don't think Easyjet do child fares) then yes she should have the same baggage allowance, but knowing low cost carriers and their money making schemes I wouldn't take this as gospel.

    If you are having problems getting through to them by phone try phoning your local airport and asking to speak to their handling agent, you might get an answer from them.

  3. No matter how many seats you book you will not get luggage allowance for a baby. It's yet another Easyjet con. They advertise cheap flights but then add on so many extra costs which add to the advertised cost.

    When you get to the departure gate Easyjet are a total mess. Getting onto the plane is just a mass brawl. They are so disorganised. I would never fly with them again, they treat people like animals.

  4. If you pay for the seat, on any airline, they get the baggage allowance. This is pretty standard throughout the industry. Even if you pay the children's fare, each child gets the same allowance so it's by the seat, not by the age of the person.

    I've had to "lie" and have added a year when purchasing a ticket for my under 2 year olds. This is not so much dishonest but actually just a way to get around the computer glictch. My goal was to buy a ticket for my child. I was not ripping the airline off, quite the opposite, they were *making* more money off of me! It was not a problem with check-in when I explained what I had done.

    Now that shipping is so expensive, sometimes it's wiser to buy a ticket than to pay overweight baggage fees. It's probably cheaper to buy the ticket than the penalities if you have a lot of things.

    Good for you booking a seat for your infant for safety too. Lap held children are not protected if anything goes wrong. Bring her car seat and use it onboard. This will not only be the safest way to fly but guarentee that you will get the seat to your destination. Don't let her seat get lost and/or damaged in the hold! (Plus another way to avoid the baggage restrictions).

    Here is what Easy Jet says;

    "To this end easyJet will accept a car seat supplied by the accompanying person for any child over six months for whom an airline seat has been purchased, provided that the car seat has a rigid metal or plastic frame, is no wider than 42cm, includes lap, shoulder and crotch straps, and is upright and forward facing."

    I have no idea why the seat has to face forward. As a former Flight Attendant, there is no safety justification for this. Also, why babies under 6 months can't fly safely is beyond me. British companies still use those dangerous "belly belts' which do NOT protect the child and are banned by other countries (Canada, the U.S., Germany, etc.)

    Hopefully, either your child is over 6 months or you can manage to bring the seat onboard anyway if she's close to that age.

    For more information on flying with children, about 8 years ago I wrote an article on the subject. I was a Flight Attendant for 13 years and fly alone with my three between Europe and California about twice a year, plus other flights (like one next week). We always take a car seat.

    I later put the article on a blog to share with other parents, many of whom have contributed. I keep it entirely non-commercial and my contact info is at the back if you have further questions.
