  1. Shipping cost truly depends on not only the weight of the item but also the method of shipping, size, and how far the item is going to travel.

    Method of shipping:

UPS, FedEx and USPS have different rates as well have different services. Ground, Second Day Air and Next Day Air are some of the options these companies have.

    Size:

Some carriers charge extra for a very large package even though it doesn't weigh very much. A very large package is known as a "Oversized Package". _Shippers likle UPS and USPS have size maximums. Usually measured in Length and Girth. If your package is unusally large you should check with the carrier. All the major carriers have websites. UPS is ups.com. USPS is usps.com. etc.

How far the package has to travel:

The shipping cost for a package going from Las Angeles CA to San Diego CA will typically cost less than a package that is going from Las Angeles CA to New York City (and within New York City, the rate may vary based on Zip code).

The best option is to use eBay Shipping calculator. When an item is listed eBay there is an option to have a shipping calulator placed on your listing so depending where the buyer is located they can calculate shipping on thier own. You may select options like UPS or USPS and servies such as Express (2nd day or next day) or Ground service.

I prefer having the shipping calculator on eBay it is convient for my buyer because the buyer can calculate the shipping right away through the listing and make quicker decision whether to bid/buy or move on. It's convient for me because, I can focus on shipping the sold items to my customer and eBay tells me how much the shipping is for that buyer.

If the item is to big for the small box carriers or international, I ask the buyer to inquire for the shipping charges.

eBay does alow you to add a handling charge to cover your non postage shipping costs (i.e. shipping and packaging materials, labels, etc.).
