  1. If you are worried about shill bidding use a bid nip procedure.

Edit  Sign up for a bidding service.  They bid at the the last moment for you for a small fee.  You set your max bid and they will bid up to that max.  Do not worry if some one out bids you. Another will come along.  On high priced items ebay does not reveal the bidders Id until the sale is over.  I use bidnip but there are many out there.  Just Google for more.

  2. While there are some cases where private listings are appropriate, such as the sale of high-priced ticket items (usually over $200) or approved pharmaceutical products, you should only make your listing private for a specific reason.

eBay allows sellers to make their bidders' identities private by using "Private Auctions."

For years people have emailed me criticizing private auctions, claiming it aids sellers with bad intentions. These people claimed that when they saw warning signs of foul play by a seller, they were unable to contact the bidder to warn them. Sometimes these people were former victims of the seller, other times they were experts in a field of collectibles and said they knew the seller was listing fakes as authentic items, others claimed sellers were using Private Auctions to place shill bids to boost their selling prices.

But some sellers are reporting that Private Auctions are helping them tremendously by preventing competitors from stealing customers and prevent scammers from ripping off their customers.
