The answer depends on what you mean by "work".

The sole point of sniping is to place a bid in the last seconds of the auction. AuctionSniper and most of the other sniping tools do that reliably... so in that sense, yes it works.

If you mean, "does sniping help me win items cheaply?", then don't count on it. Popular items tend to sell for similar prices every time, so sniping might help you win but you will still need to put in a reasonable bid. For less common items sniping might get them for a low price, but you run the risk of losing to a higher-bidding sniper.

If you are new to sniping I would recommend Gixen (web-based) or JBidWatcher (downloaded software).
