I purchased to dvd's on ebay and I want to know if the web page says that I have to pay $ 3.39 for shipping on one item and 6.25 for the other movie but when I look at the shipping package and one says they paid 2.43 and 1.68 is that illegal to do to jack up the price of shipping? I feel that I got ripped off and I dont know if there is anything that I can do about it. I have been using ebay for a while now and I am good when it comes to selling stuff but not when it comes to purchasing. Can someone give me some feedback.

  1. Unfortunately it is not illegal, i did a bit of research and if they are overcharging for item insurance it is illegal, however excessive hipping fees are not.

I have been caught by the shipping fees trap before on ebay, the only way to prevent it is to look carefully at the shipping cost and not just the item price. When i shop on ebay i look for a low price and then i look at the shipping costs plug a few numbers into my calculator and work out the cheapest item in the list or if all shipping fees are too high i don't buy the item.

Amazon is a good place to use instead of ebay as all shipping costs unlike ebay are fixed and so what a DVD costs to ship from one seller will be exactly the same with all sellers so you can guarantee a fair shipping price.

All you can do now about the overcharged items you just brought is give the seller negative feedback and send a complaint to ebay and just be careful of shipping costs, use somewhere else like amazon to avoid overcharging.

    Hope i helped.

  2. The seller charges for shipping and handling.  (handling is for the package, tape, ink from the pen to write on it, the gas to drive to the P.O. and their time to wrap it.  They can ask what ever they want for it.  It's a gimmick, they drop the sales cost by $10 to attract a buyer but add it to the shipping costs.

Watch what your bidding on, and look at the real selling cost

  3. "Shipping" on eBay isn't just the actual postage. It's the container it's shipped in, packing (peanuts or bubble wrap, etc.), their time to wrap it up and take it down to the post office, etc., etc.

  4. They make the price low on the item because ebay charges what you make on an item, and then they jack up the price of shipping so they can make money without giving it to ebay.

  5. They can charge anything they want for shipping and it's up to you as the buyer to either agree to pay what their prices are or try to find the item from somebody else with cheaper shipping. I buy a lot of sports cards on Ebay and I see that all the time. The shipping prices for a single baseball card runs from $1.00 to $5.00. That's always the first thing I look for, shipping price.

  6. That's the way all eBay sellers do things. Some offer merchandise at a very low price but charge high shipping rates. Some offer the same merchandise at a more realistic price and charge less for shipping. Some haven't a clue what it's actually going to cost to ship a particular item, so they just make up a shipping amount that sounds good and hope they don't wind up cheating themselves.

There's no regulation on what someone can charge for shipping, just like there's no regulation on what someone can ask as a starting price or a Buy It Now price or a reserve price. Anyone can sell any item at absolutely *any* price they want on eBay. There's not the slightest thing illegal about it.

Short answer: when you're considering whether you want to bid on an item, take the total cost, item PLUS shipping, into account when you decide what to bid.

  7. No it is not illegal. Actually a lot of the volume discount sellers make little profit on their product. They make a couple of dollars per item that they ship. They can charge what ever they want for shipping and handling as long as their charges are posted for you to read.

  8.    Just  today  I  recieved  a book  I  ordered,  E  Bay  fior  Dummies.  From my  experiences  you  also  need consider  the cost  of  wrapping  material, their  time  to take  to be  sent.  My  book  shows a  example that pack and handeling is not shown to buyers but will be in  shpping total.  This  was  stated in section about ebay shipping calculator. Also  meantions buying  in  own  state  may  have additional  charge for  tax.    I did  not  know  that!.    Heres  something,,,advise to seller:   shipping  calculations  can be  off target,  and  may not know  this till after  money  taken. If in seller  favor and  a  biggie, notifie buyer and offer refund,    if  not and  slightly  off take  the  lumps and  pay it. It is  OK  to let buyer know this  but he is not  required to pay.   Spending  goodwill never  hurts End  of  quote.     So  if  I  understand  correctly  you  can  send  olite  E  about  your  concern and  see if  a  mstake  happened.  Good  Luck.   I  hope to  be  seller soon is  why I  ordered  book.
