Ebden/Harrison rally past Huey/Sweeting into the quarterfinals – Hall of Fame Championships 2011
Matthew Ebden of Australia and Ryan Harrison of USA defeated Filipino/American team of Treat Conrad Huey and Ryan Sweeting in three sets 6-2, 6-7(4), 10-6 in the first round at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in
Newport on Wednesday. It took the Australian/American pair an hour and seventeen minutes to undo their opponents.
Ebden and Harrison thrashed the Filipino/American pair in the first set as they dropped only two games, breaking their opponents twice and winning the set 6-2.
The Australian/American pair delivered 45 percent of the first serves and a single ace in the first set. Ebden and Harrison grabbed 78 percent of the first service points and 82 percent of the second service points in the opening
set. In comparison, Huey and Sweeting kept their first serve percentage at 38 percent and converted 88 percent of the first serves into points. Ebden and Harrison capitalised on both break point opportunities they created on the Filipino/American team’s serve
and saved both break points on their own serve in the opening set.
The Australian/American pair and their opponents could not break each other in the second set and tied the score at 6-6 to take the set to a tie-break. Huey and Sweeting bagged a couple of mini-breaks in the tie-break to capture
it 7-4.
The Filipino/American combination hit a single ace and three double faults in the second set. Huey and Sweeting delivered 59 percent of the first serves and sealed a whopping 82 percent of the points on them. On the other hand,
Ebden and Harrison had a slightly lower first serve percentage as they hit 58 percent of the first serves but their conversion rate was far below, converting 60 percent of the first serves into points. The Australian/American duo managed to win a meagre 18
percent of the first return points. Whereas, Huey and Ebden returned quite well as they grabbed 40 percent of the points on the first returns. Both teams failed to capitalise on the two break point opportunities they created in the second set.
Ebden and Harrison bounced back in the match tie-break, claiming a couple of mini-breaks to win it 10-6.
The Australian/American pair’s serve was the difference between the two teams as they won an amazing 100 percent of the first service points in the match tie-break.
The wild card entrants will take on top seeds Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram of USA in the quarterfinals. The Americans beat Jamie Delgado and Jonathan Marray of Great Britain in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(4) in the first round.
