Ecclestone against the V4’s proposed by Jean Todt for 2013 - Formula 1 Update
Formula 1 chief, Bernie Ecclestone, has recently objected to the idea of Jean Todt for teams to start using the V4 turbo engines for the 2013 Formula 1 season and has commented that it will compromise the sports viewership. He joked about the rule and said
that these kinds of innovations should be taken in the saloon car racing series.
The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile or FIA decided that to cut down the cost of the Formula 1 teams, the engine capacity should be reduced. Jean Todt, the chairman of the FIA said that 1.6 litres V4 engines will be used in the Formula 1 cars from
the 2013 season. He stated that the fuel and the V8 engine itself make the Formula 1 sport much expensive for the smaller teams.
Ecclestone already sees Formula 1 as the sports for millionaires, as he discussed the Virgin and Hispania Racing Team and how they should withdraw from the sport as it is a bit more expensive than they can afford. He thinks that modifying the cars to V4
engines with one exhaust will compromise the two things that make Formula 1 an exciting sport. He said, “One crucial factor is Ferrari and second is the noise [of the engine]. I'm anti, anti, anti, anti moving into this small turbo four formula.” Ecclestone
joked and suggested that Todt’s rule of V4 machines is quite futile.
Ecclestone further added that the Formula 1 is the most watched sport and largely becoming the most expensive sport as the car is a platform for sponsor advertisement. He said that if the engine is compromised, so is the speed of the car. “These changes
are going to be terribly costly to the sport. I'm sure the promoters will lose a big audience and I'm quite sure we'll lose TV.”
The Mercedes team boss, Ross Brawn, said recently that with the rule of V4 engines in 2013, the engineers will come up with some interesting innovation to even the speed of the car.
For now, the cars will have Bernie’s favourite V8 engines, but the decision of 2013 engines is still a question mark for him.
