Eco-Friendly, Cheap, Cars?

Question

I'm getting my first car in two years. I know that it's early, but I want to find a car that eco-friendly, and cheap enough for a car that your parents would buy. It has to be four door (its a rule) and needs to be reliable, because I will have it through college. I also need to be able to fill up pretty much anywhere. Any suggestions?

For the money, the Toyota Corolla is probably the most cost effective. I believe it is under $15,000 and will get 38-40MPG. That's not much less than a hybrid, and it is a very nice comfortable car that will seat 4-5 and last a long time. Maybe by the time you get a car, the diesel cars they now have in Europe will be here. I really like the VW Polo. It is a nice car that gets 60-70MPG. I believe it is around $20,000. The diesel has the advantage of better fuel mileage (Much less pollution than a hybrid), but also an burn Bio diesel.

start by deciding what you consider "eco-friendly". to some that means it gets good gas mileage, to others it mean low emissions. you also have to decide how much you can spend on the vehicle you want to buy. the more money you can spend the more numerous your options. if you can afford them, look at a honda element or scion XB. a few other vehicles that fit your parameters, the ford escape, the focus, toyota corolla, the honda civic, most any of the kia line, chevy aveo, most anything from suzuki.

You will not like this answer but I'd say if you are a young kid starting college, consider going to college at a local 2 year school, live at home and ride a bike or walk or simply live in the dorm and walk to classes. Save your money or more likely your parents money and impress them with your wisdom. Also, since you are likely to damage the car as a new driver, I'd not buy a brand new car. A toyota or similar car that is a few years old will still be reliable for a long time if properly managed.

Old diesel Mercedes. I bought mine for $400, they usually last at least 300K miles, they get *OK* milage, 20-30mpg and run on 100% earth friendly veggy oil.
