  1. Good!

  2. eco - economical?

    eco - ecological?

    "affordable" housing in the UK, ie that receiving government subsidy, has to meet sustainable homes level 3 (25% improvement on open market houses), rising to level 6 "carbon neutral" by 2010. http://www.communities.gov.uk/planningan...

    Sustainable materials; local sourcing;

    low fuel costs;

    low water usage;

    environmentally friendly (built & natural environment);

    community engagement & infrastructure;

    life-time cost savings;

    what could be bad about any of the above - except to the profit margins of developers who have ripped off home buyers with poor performance products for decades?

  3. Everyones idea on eco and green seems to be different - i am finding my ideas are extreme in comparison to most people i meet.

    An eco home to me would be very low impact - i like the idea of cob - using from the land where you intend to build, old tyres like the Brighton Earthship, coz they are waste and to build with them doesnt need them to be recycled into something else, they are just reused, which seems like a very economical building resource to me.

    An eco home would be well insulated tyres and cob would be good at this.  A living roof - covered in plants, off the grid - using only rain, sun and wind, maybe a well or bore hole for drinking water.  Candles for lighting, rushes and bees wax or fat, maybe a solar panel? (havent worked out my consumption yet but know i dont need much in the way of electrical power, computer is the main thing i use but could do without).

    It all depends what people want to do without - eco to me means reducing what we use and only taking what we can supply ourself with as in self sufficiency not financially.

    Eco housing is good if it meets all the needs of the occupiers without depriving the earth or others.........

  4. If it powers itself and is energy-efficient by construction, the energy costs might make it economically good too.

  5. If it's going to double the price of the house - BAD!

    If you can do it for the price of a normal house - GOOD!

  6. Most "Eco" houses I've seen are still built traditionally and that uses a lot of energy.

    The majority of people still think cutting down trees is "renewable" which is another bad mistake. (Many people are still opting for timber-framed houses, timber kitchens and hardwood floorings, decking...)

    To be truly Environment Friendly everything must be produced via E.F. / sustainable / non-polluting methods.

    I believe a re-think is needed from which a new-style will evolve and be adopted wide-scale.
