Question:

Eco-friendly driving lessons in (south) London?

I'd like to learn the skill of driving but aware of the huge negative impact cars have on the environment. Are there any driving schools out there that offer lessons in fuel efficient cars, offset the carbon emissions from the lessons and teach you how to drive in the most efficient, environmentally friendly way?

  1. There is always the virtual reality driving school .

  2. very good!

  3. Learning to drive in a small diesel car is your best bet. Your first priority is to learn to drive safely. A very large percentage of the energy used in a car's life goes into its manufacture, so not breaking them is a good thing for the environment.

A lot of the skills taught to you are useful for driving economically. Anticipation based on your observation of the conditions ahead of you will help you make good choices.

    Don't accelerate or brake hard.

Leaving a reasonable gap between you and the car ahead will mean that you can maintain a more constant speed. Every time you press the brake pedal, you are turning fuel into heat. By hanging back you are more able to slow down by coasting, rather than using the brakes.

Sticking to the speed limit, even when the road is empty, will conserve fuel.

As your experience develops, you will be able to develop your skills further. You can select the highest gear in which the car will drive without struggling in given conditions. Whilst learning you may drive in a lower gear that gives you more opportunity to accelerate or decelerate, without having to change gear.

Best of all is to only use the car for journeys that can't be done on foot or bicycle. Cars burn fuel at their slowest rate when they're not being used. Something like half of all car journeys are less than 5 miles in length (including some of mine). I've saved almost 20% of my commuting fuel (1200 miles-worth) this year by cycling to work.

    Good luck
