  1. They convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form that can be utilized by plants and animals.  Without them, all of the inorganic nitrogen that is in the air and soil would be unavailable to most living organisms.


  2. The plant available forms of nitrogen that they produce are nitrates and ammonium. They are Rizobial bacteria.

  3. Nitrogen fixation is basically the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia by bacteria(rhizobium for ex). Plants cannot utilize atmospheric nitrogen (N2) and have to convert it to a usable form (ammonia NH3).
